1034 Princess Avenue (ex-1028 Princess Av)

Built 1911
Heritage-Designated 2006

For: Samuel Calvert

1034 Princess

ARCHITECTURE:

This house is the mirror-image of 1030 Princess Av, built from the same plans. 1030 retains its side-facing front stairs, while 1034 now has steps facing the street. The verandah of this two-storey Edwardian Four-Square house was for some years enclosed, but new owners reopened it in 2007 and restored the verandah in 2012.

ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:

They were built for and possibly by Samuel Calvert (1873-1931), who came to Victoria from Orchardville, ON, in 1908. The Calvert family lived in this one. Samuel first worked with his brother Frank Calvert (1900 Belmont Av, 1508 Gladstone Av, Fernwood) in the clothing business, and by 1911 was a real estate agent. After his death in 1931, this house was rented to a succession of families.

OTHER OCCUPANTS:

Norman Wolfe (1879-1955) and Ethel (1871-1967) Wilson lived here briefly in 1931. Norman was a farmer who came to Victoria from Ontario c.1893. In 1909 he married Ethel Crowe, newly arrived from London, England. Norman later ran a golf club. The couple moved to Saltspring Island, where they lived for many years.

By 1935, Thomas Peden, a pipefitter with the CPR, and his wife Elizabeth were the residents.

Charles (1892-1975) and Mary (Redpath, 1885-1967) Burnett then rented the house from 1935 until c.1943. Charles was born in Belfast, Ireland, Mary in Glasgow, Scotland. They came to Victoria in 1913. Charles served overseas with the 11th Canadian Seige Battery during WWI, and with the RCAF during WWII. He was a member of Britannia Lodge, AF & AM. Charles was a stationary and marine engineer with the CPR and Dockyard for many years.

Ruth Aileen Hooper (née Morley) lived here while her husband Frederick George Hooper was on active service overseas during WWII. They married in Victoria in 1939.

In 1950-55 the owner was Miss Sheila M. Kelly, machine operator with W&J Wilson (811 St Charles St, Rockland); by 1953, Sheila had married Herbert G. Ingram, a clerk for the provincial government, and she was a ledgerkeeper for Wilsons.
