ARCHITECTURE:
This Edwardian Colonial Bungalow has a bellcast hipped roof with modillions in the eaves and dentils in the frieze. It has a bellcast dormer on the front and one on the R side. On the right is a box bay; on the left, a basement door and open stairway to the main floor. There is a wide angled bay on the right front and a recessed porch on the left. A room has been added within the porch preserving its balustrades and chamfered posts. The front steps have stepped, shingled balustrades. The house is clad in double-bevelled siding with shingles below the water table. The original front garden wall built of concrete block remains.
ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:
1910-29: William Joseph Clark (1860-1929) and Jane (née Tait, b. QC c.1849-1923) came here from Ottawa and established a dairy farm at 51 Henry Av (now Hillside Av) in 1886, then dairying and ranching on 2nd St before retiring here in 1911. He was a member of IOOF and Loyal Orange Assoc.
OTHER OCCUPANTS:
1930-32: Victoria Candy Co prop Louis Karadimas (b. Greece 1893-1972) married Lila Pearl (née Harris, b. SK, c.1918) in Oak Bay in 1928 [marriage dissolved Oct. 1950]. He came here in 1925, in 1932-45 was a Vic Gas stoker (502 Pembroke St), then opened St. James Cafe. His second wife was Clara Mabel Allison (1912-1992). 1933-35: Frederick William Doherty (b. Thorburn, NS 1877-1970) and Ida Mae (née Terris, b. Dover, NS 1880-1950) came to BC in 1905. He worked for 32 years with BCER, then BC Electric.
1936-47: James Henry Crosier (b. London, ENG 1892-1974) and Louisa (née Lowe, b. Halifax, NS 1891-1976). During WWI he was cook on HMCS Rainbow and later, HMCS Patrician and HMCS Vancouver. He was a partner with O.G. Bond in Wimpy’s Restaurant, later owning it. Son Lt. Ralph J. Crosier (b. Victoria 1919), a VHS grad and well-known local athlete was WIA in 1944 while serving in France with 1st Btn, Can Scottish Regt.
1951-70: City clerk Robert John Chant (b. Plymouth, ENG 1909-1975) came here when he was 21 and worked for Mc&Mc Hardware 1931-48. His mother Winnifred Lillie (née Doidge, b. Cardiff, WAL 1888-1970) wife of John Chant (b. Hull, ENG 1886-1952) joined him here in 1935.
