ARCHITECTURE:
This one-storey, hip-roofed bungalow has very wide eaves. It has a central stairway leading to the front door and an inset porch to the right. The single porch support is a heavy square post; the front steps and the porch have matching solid balustrades. To the left of the porch is a cantilevered box bay on shallow brackets, and to the rear, a pair of one-over-one double-hung sashes; the box bay has four casements with leaded glass transoms. The left side of the house has a leaded glass piano window matching the art glass in the box bay. The exterior finish is bevelled siding. There is a shallow extension on the rear. The brick chimneys and the stone garden wall have concrete caps.
ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:
1910-34: Ralph Henry Flitton (b. Thrapston, Northants, ENG 1846-1932) married Letitia Jane (née Deane, b. Southhampton, ENG 1849-1941) in Bedford, ENG in 1872. They came to Vancouver in 1893 and he opened a general merchandise store, then worked as an accountant and piano tuner. In 1904 he joined eldest son Geoffrey Arnold Deane Flitton (b. Royston, Herts, ENG 1878-1938) in Victoria as a salesman in his son’s newly established furniture business. By 1908 each had their own store, H.R. Flitton & Co furniture and G.A.D. Flitton, VP & mgr Capital Furniture Co. After Ralph’s death, Letitia moved to Los Angeles where she lived with son Charles and family..
OTHER OCCUPANTS:
1936-37: Auto body mechanic Millard Henry Mooney (b. Weyburn, SK 1906-1966) married Jean (née Morrison, b. Stornoway, SK 1907-1997) in Edmonton in 1932. They came here in 1935 and he worked for R.B. Wilson Motor House. In 1940 he set up his own repair shop, eventually employing 50 people here and in Duncan branch. He was 14 years on City council, serving 1961-65 under Mayor R.B. “Dick” Wilson (1770 Rockland Av). Millard drowned while trying to cross Cowichan River on foot.
1938-41: House painter Robert Rufus Shearing (b. Wetaskiwin, AB 1912-1945) married Annie (née Stockley, b. Leamington Spa, ENG 1909-1981) here in 1935. He was then with Williams, Trerise & Williams, contractors & builders. He joined Can Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) in 1942 and was KIA in 1945. He is buried in Groesbeek Can War Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands.
1945-57: Sidney Roofing Co employee Edward F. M. Jackson married Elizabeth M. (née Souter, b. Watrous, SK) in September 1939. He was already serving with the 1st Btn. Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s).
