ARCHITECTURE:
This Minimal-Traditional, side-gabled, one-storey asymmetrical cottage has a full-height bay on the left side towards the rear. A large, steep-gabled extension on the front left has a round-topped window in its apex above a curve-topped three-part window on the main floor. [The cat-slide of the front gable in the original design was not built.] To the right of that gable is a small, flat-roofed porch extension; concrete steps and iron railings lead to the inset front door. Right of the porch is a pair of sash windows over the original basement garage doors. The cladding is stucco with one brick chimney. It was built for $2,300 by James Fairall (515 Springfield St).
ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:
1940-89: Samuel “Sam” Morris Waddington (b. Nanaimo, BC 1882-1968) married Alice Maude (née Cheney, b. Denman Island, BC 1894-1989) in Fanny Bay, BC in 1914. [His parents, Samuel Ferrand Waddington, who came from ENG in the 1860s, and Ada Hilbert married in Nanaimo in 1879, where they farmed.] Sam was section foreman and they lived in the cottage next to the roundhouse; son Stan was born in the cottage.
OTHER OCCUPANTS:
1989-2022: CPO Stanley “Stan” Arthur Waddington, RCN (b. Victoria 1925-2017) married Viola Margaret (née Smith, b. Vancouver, BC 1925) here in 1947. They lived in the basement suite of 224 for two years and daughter Sandra “Sandy” Louise (married David Parsons in 1979) was born in 1948. They moved to Halifax, NS with the Navy for two years, then moved back to the basement suite where daughter Jacqueline “Jacquie” Leanne was born in 1953. In 1954 they built 236 Robert St and moved there. After leaving the Navy in 1963-64, Stan worked as a machinist at CFB Dockyard until retiring. He had a greenhouse and was an avid gardener. Viola loved playing bingo and sang with Sweet Adelines in the Western Communities, along with daughter Jacquie.
Alice Waddington and son Stan bought 255 Robert for Jacquie in 1972 for $39,500, which she paid back, and in 1986 she married Garry Clarence Monahan (b. Langley, BC 1957). In 1994 the Monahans moved to Chilliwack; Jacquie moved back to the front house at 224 Robert St in 2015 until 2022 when the entire house was sold [in 1987 Stan and Viola removed the back wall of 224, built an attached house behind and moved into the new section, while Alice continued to live in the original house]. Since August 2023 Jacquie has lived in 230C Robert, the restored Annandale Carriage House cottage.
