ARCHITECTURE:

This house is the mirror-image of 1030 Princess Av, built from the same plans. 1030 retains its side-facing front stairs, while 1034 now has steps facing the street. The verandah of this two-storey Edwardian Four-Square house was for some years enclosed, but new owners reopened it in 2007 and restored the verandah in 2012.

ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:

1911-31: Samuel Calvert (b. Orchardville, ON 1873- 1931) married Sadie Anderson (b. Sweden) in Winnipeg in 1898. He came here in 1911 from MacDonald, MB where  he was a general merchant and he built 1034 and 1030. He went into real estate in 1912, working for Prairie Realty  Co in 1915. In 1916-17 he was a clothing salesman for brother Frank Calvert’s (1900 Belmont St, 1508 Gladstone Av) “Fit-Reform.” After his death, this house  was rented.

OTHER OCCUPANTS:

Tenants: 1931: Farmer/marine engineer Norman Wolfe Wilson (b. ON 1879-1955) joined  some of his family  on Salt Spring Is in  April 1894. In 1909  he married Ethel (née Crowe, b. ENG  1871-1967) in St.  Mark’s Church, Salt  Spring. He was proprietor of Salt Spring Golf Club for 20  years. He died after suffering a stroke and falling over a cliff. 1933-34: Victoria City fireman Joseph Law (b. SCT  1903-1970) married Violet K (née Marchant, b. Duncan,  BC 1907-1997) in Duncan in 1933. He retired as Saanich Fire Chief in 1964.

1935-44: CPR, BCCSS and Dockyard  stationary engineer Charles Burnett (b. Belfast, IRL 1892- 1975) and Mary (née Redpath, b. Glasgow, SCT 1885- 1967) came here in 1913. He enlisted as a gunner, 62nd  Battery, 15th Overseas Btn in 1916, transferring to 11th  Cdn. Siege Battery in France. He joined RCAF during  WWII. He was a member of Britannia Lodge, AF&AM  and Camosun Chapter, RAM.

1945-48: Ruth Aileen Hooper (née Morley, b. Victoria  1916-2011) [parents Guy and Lillian Morley, 1569 Pembroke St] lived here while husband, WO Frederick  George Hooper, RCA (b. Vancouver, 1915-2002), was  on WWII active service. They met while both working  for HBC and married in 1939. 1950-55: Miss Sheila  M. Kelly, machine operator, then ledgerkeeper for W&J  Wilson (811 St Charles St), married Mc&Mc Hardware price clerk Herbert G. Ingram in 1953.
